When asked when he was born he states, "The day I was born."
Matt has played the drums for 24 years. His gear preferences are as follows: Yamaha Drums, Pearl and Ludwig snares, Sabian and Zildjian cymbals, Evans and Remo heads, Gibraltar, Pearl and Tama hardware.
McCoy has pounded the skins for many bands including The Fill Ins, 21st Century Goliath, American Murder, Meat Rocket, Ghost In A Shell, The Black Knots, Lure 609.
The most influential musician in his life would have been Randy Shields. Shields used to live near him in his hometown and would come check on Matt from time to time when he heard him jamming as he passed by. Randy was about 10 years older than Matt and the was only person that tried pointing him in the right direction with tips on playing and studying without passing judgment on his musical tastes.
For Matt No Power No Crown is an idea stating that if you take something or someone's power away, they won't be able to wear their "crown" and control you. He's been trying to use that notion in his everyday life since joining the band. McCoy doesn't let work, money, stress, etc. be the controlling factor of his life. "I don't give it the power, I strip its crown away."
For him, Be peace or else is all about Karma. Be peaceful or suffer the consequences of your actions.
Matt's favorite song is "Party All Night Long." He says it's just an absolute blast to play live.
In his spare time he loves corrupting young minds with ideas of Anarchy and Individualism.
His position in the band is coming in and taking on the role left by Tim "Looney" Stewart who had to bow out of the band due to health concerns. Matt's take on his place is, "We're a bunch of sick old fuckers and we're all falling apart. I'm just replacing another sad old fart, much like myself, that had some nasty health issues."
He feels that being a part of the band revolves around the three F's: Friendships, Family, Fun.
Matt McCoy's parting wisdom is to be yourself, be an individual, be independent, and love the people and the world that surrounds you.
